Initial Situation

The national master plans for cycling and walking aim to achieve a significant increase in active mobility by 2030. A key challenge is to determine whether safe pedestrian and cycle routes exist along the higher-priority road network, or whether they can be replaced by suitable alternative routes. However, there is currently no standardised, comprehensive assessment method that can be used to systematically determine where main roads are adequately served by pedestrian and cycle facilities and where there are infrastructure deficits or gaps in accessibility.

Project Goals

  • Development of an automated method for identifying parallel pedestrian and cycle routes along main roads.

  • Comprehensive assessment of the higher-level road network with regard to existing, alternative or missing infrastructure.

  • Provision of geodata, key figures and reports for monitoring and as a basis for decision-making.

Expected Results

  • A reproducible and scalable method for identifying alternative route connections along main roads.

  • A classified main road network showing existing, alternative or missing pedestrian and cycle infrastructure.

  • Geodata and statistics for monitoring and planning.

  • An annually updated report.
